Taking a break, Copenhagen, Denmark

Imagine being transported to somewhere else in the world for a unique take on a location, an event, an experience or a reaction. All from the comfort and convenience of your inbox or app.

That’s what these snippets of travel writing reminiscences are: entries from my log gathered over several decades and across almost 80 countries explored.

While I’m no Bruce Chatwin or Eric Newby or Paul Theroux (at least not yet), the style and intent of these posts might be considered outtakes from travel writers like them.

What you can expect

On or about each day ending in a zero (10, 20th and 30th of the month), I’ll post the latest story. Most will be free, but some will be serialised with subsequent instalments for paid subscribers only.

How I got here

Many years ago I won a trip to Paris. It was my one and only experience of representing my country: Australia.

Anyway, I delayed the return flight by a year, to make the most of the good fortune. When that time came to return, I was only just getting started on this vagabonding way. Alas, it was almost four years later before I eventually made my way home to Sydney.

That adventure set in motion a lust for wandering and wondering, that many decades later, has not subsided.

This log then is an attempt to document past, current and soon to be encountered travel exploits, be they sourced on the road, off the rails, all at sea, or up in the air. You can read more about A Vagabond’s Log here.

I’m a journalist by trade. Initially in print; but mostly digital these days. LinkedIn would qualify me as a cross between a content designer and UX writer. That’s my day job in a part-time freelance capacity. The rest of my time is spent publishing travel and feature articles as well as presenting courses for the Australian Writers’ Centre.

Some of the clients and publishers I’ve worked with to date.
